Times When 14- and 15-Year-Olds May Work

  • Between 7 AM and 7 PM; or
  • Between 7 AM and 9 PM from June 1 through Labor Day; and
  • Outside school hours

  • Minors age 14 and 15 may only work between the hours of 7 AM and 7 PM, except from June 1 through Labor Day, when they may work until 9 PM.
  • The 7 PM time limit applies between Labor Day and June 1 even if there is no school the next day. For example, it applies on a Friday or Saturday night and in weeks that school is not in session such as during spring break. Reg. 570.35
  • A minor may work between the hours of 7 AM and 7 PM, but still may not work more than 3 hours on a school day, and 8 hours on a non-school day.
  • Minors age 14 and 15 are not permitted to work during school hours. The term “outside of school hours” means the time before and after school, holidays, Saturday, Sunday, vacation time, and any day when school is not scheduled to be open for students.
  • School hours are determined by the normal operating hours of the local school district where the minor is residing while employed – even if the minor attends private school, is home-schooled, or attends no school.
